Drinks on the Veranda

From September 16, 2023 4:00 pm until September 16, 2023 7:00 pm

This event is for adults 21 and over only

Following our Tubman Day festivities join us for our annual Drinks on the Veranda from 4 PM to 7 PM to toast the end of summer.

Sa mple historical libations and culinary delights at this intoxicating evening on the farm. Relax in the shade of our wrap-around porch and enjoy a cool respite from the summertime heat. Come with friends and make some new ones. 19th-century games, vintage libations, hot jazz and cool bites await.

Sample wine and spirits from Maryland distilleries and African-American producers.

Funds raised will help support programs and the ongoing restoration of our 19th-century farm. Learn about new projects to be launched in 2024!

Did You Know?

Julep Border tmbLong before Kentucky was settled, Marylanders were producing the Mint Julep using rye whiskey. Or at least that is what has been claimed by many drink historians and mixologists (Google it!).  One Maryland recipe, recorded in the early 20th century in Maude Bomburger’s Colonial Recipes From Old Virginia and Maryland Manors: With Numerous Legends and Traditions Interwoven calls for the popular addition of Brandy over Rye along with some artful and strident rituals. Bomburger calls for gathering the mint from the garden “when the dew is on it” and pulverizing the leaves in a mortar made of Beechwood, and drinking from the tankard and not from a straw!

The Mint Julep is one of the featured drinks at Veranda that we serve up cold and refreshing for our guests. Come and taste a Maryland tradition and toast the end of summer 2023!
