Celebrate the remarkable life of Harriet Tubman (1822-1913), who made her first attempt to reach freedom on September 17, 1849, at our 8th Annual Tubman Day Celebration. Tubman not only claimed her own freedom but secured the liberation of others, returning a dozen times to Maryland to lead some seventy friends and family members out of bondage. Founded at Button Farm in 2017, Tubman Day reveals Harriet's achievements through hands-on activities for visitors of all ages.
Menare Founder, Anthony Cohen, will kick off our event with The Tubman Journey to Freedom Story, discussing the making of the 2,200 lbs. bronze statue by North Carolina artist Wesley Wofford. Cohen will give background on the artist, the sculpture’s symbolism, and its role on #FreedomWalk2026, as it traveled through five states and Canada for the nation’s 250th commemoration this past summer. Cohen will then lead participants in the “Tubman Challenge,” an emotive interaction with the statue and its powerful message of freedom.

Toast the close of summer at our third annual Drinks on the Veranda event.
Come savor our 19th & 20th-century Southern libations and culinary delights. Relax on the veranda, stroll the garden grounds, and mix and mingle with food and history lovers. Our menu will be paired with history, music, and merriment.
